Welcome

PCEI's Palouse Roots

“An environment-based education movement--at all levels of education--will help students realize that school isn't supposed to be a polite form of incarceration, but a portal to the wider world.”

― Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods

We want children to love learning, to know the woods and the fields like they know themselves, to know the richness that comes from a community working together, and to find themselves being called to the outdoors rather than to the indoor environment of screens and sterile safety. We want them to be risk managers not risk avoiders. We want them to trust and love people not fear them. We want them to trust themselves and respect the world they live in. We will help their parents guide them to this place by providing them with a learning environment full of beauty, curiosity, affection, and growth, and surrounded by trees, soil, friends, and birdsong. While doing this we will help build the foundation of learning they need to then excel in school, jobs, and bettering their world.

Richard Louv

"Given the chance, a child will bring the confusion of the world to the woods, wash it in the creek, and turn it over to see what lives on the unseen side of that confusion."

"We love our daughter going to Palouse Roots! She comes back after a day outside happy, content, full of new ideas, and tired!"

-Brooke

"This outdoor school is exactly what we were hoping for kindergarten for our daughter. She has learned how to be prepared for whatever the weather brings and that has allowed her to succeed in the outdoor classroom and grow in her resilience. Her confidence and creativity have soared when given the time and space to explore outdoors"

-Chelsea

"Our daughter has a lot of high energy and a traditional school setting is often difficult for her socially, academically and emotionally. But after being a part of this forest school, she is more social, more confident, and more focused on her tasks and activities."

-Jessica
